College App Procedures

With a new school year beginning, many students are working to keep up with current assignments and not necessarily thinking ahead to college– yet. However, Buford hosted a college application day where seniors met with multiple college reps and were able to apply to college for free. With huge changes approaching, some students are unsure of how to be prepared. Learning how to manage and begin preparation can make a huge difference in a student’s future. 

Learning to apply to college can be a whole new world for high school seniors. The Buford High School Guidance Department has an entire section dedicated to college on their website. The webpage is easy to navigate and includes helpful information such as tutorial videos, website links, and written explanations. Alongside help from the guidance website, students may speak to teachers or parents about college, gather information from credible sources, and explore university websites. 

A huge part of college for many students is the opportunity to apply to scholarships. The Guidance Department on the BHS website includes a scholarship section that includes an active spreadsheet of available scholarships. Underneath, a list of credible scholarship websites are linked below. Each website explains the scholarship, the requirements, and gives you a place to fill out the application. Be prepared to have an essay written, as some require an essay submission to be eligible to apply! 

College application day was Friday, August 21st. The event was held in the multipurpose building FLEX rooms. Students went to their allotted time slot they chose prior. They brought and used their packet form, photo ID, and social security card to use on applications. Multiple reps and advisors were present at the event and helped guide students along the way. The event gave students the opportunity to apply to colleges surrounded by people who know how to help. College advisors from USC, Winthrop, York Tech, and more, were available to aid students and recommend their program or school to them. 

Columbia college admissions counselor, Daelon Adaway challenges students to step out of their comfort zone. “Apply, apply, apply. Don't limit yourself to just one school, the opportunities out here are limitless,” he says, “When it comes to scholarships, don't limit yourself to just one scholarship, apply to all of them.” Adaway also believes that scholars should prioritize high school grades and focus on their academics. “Focus on high school, make sure your final grades and your transcripts are good because that's what we look at. We look at GPA, your performance, and what you did in high school; whether that was sports, clubs, activities, or achievements. You name it, we look at it.”

College can be a huge stress in a high school senior’s life. This feeling can come from confusion and fear of change. Allowing students an opportunity to learn and explore their resources helps speed up the process and make a seemingly difficult task as simple as possible. We encourage students to use the resources provided to them and seek help if needed.
